Jefferson County, Colorado was name after the third U.S. president Thomas Jefferson, the county was formally organized in 1861 by the Colorado Territorial Legislature.

Jefferson County is the fourth most populous of the 64 counties of the State of Colorado of the United States. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the county population was 533,339 in 2008. The county seat is Golden and the most populous city is Lakewood.
