MVCC was established in 1922 and continues to be one of the most popular places in Je Co. After Golden visionary William Williams (“Cement Bill”) built the 4.2-mile Lariat Trail of switchbacks by 1912-14, Denver Mountain Parks began to develop. An outdoor theatre was established along Lookout Mountain Road in 1919. Denver residents brought their picnic supper and enjoyed the show. This began development of Mount Vernon Country Club just west of the outdoor theatre along Lookout Mountain Road.
Local summer cabin owners and visitors joined “The Club” to enjoy “restful privacy... in the nest climate in the world, for both summer and winter... The ozone in the air and brilliance and purity of sunshine on nature makes this the ideal home away from home... no dampness in the air... no mosquitoes or dust... summer average temperature 20 degrees cooler than Denver... Autumn is glorious... safe, and happy surroundings where friendly hospitality is the watchword.”
Tennis and swimming were added and have been updated. Many “DO NOT PICK THE FLOWERS” signs promoted nature conservation and protected wild ora and fauna. After Hwy. 40 was built by the WPA in 1937, all unsold lots were controlled by the nonpro t corporation. The board refused many buyout o ers and local residences were limited to 98 in 1956. After support of local residents (proprietary), the board established a Colorado Metro Special District in 1990. Social memberships have continued at about 2,600 in 2016.
