This rst Territorial Capitol of Colorado (1862-67) has a preserved historical downtown area. Golden Landmarks Association volunteers led a successful crusade to save the Astor House and many other historic buildings since 1972.
Clear Creek passes through the town surrounded by Lookout, Zion, North Table and South Table Mountains. The pioneers who settled Golden brought an amazing combination of skills and enthusiasm. The strategic location attracted gold seekers heading west. It had a newspaper by 1866, railroad transportation in 1870, and an incorporated city in 1871. Coors manufacturing and 120 businesses were thriving by 1882. Bu alo Rose is Colorado’s oldest bar, beginning in 1859.
Golden has an elected city council and mayor, police and re departments, Fossil Trace Golf Course, parks and recreation and all other city services. The 2016 population within the 8-square mile city boundary is about 20,000. The population of unincorporated communities surrounding Golden adds another 90,000 for zip codes 80401 and 80403. The downtown businesses are constantly busy with locals and tourists. There are six miles of trails through 21 city parks that total 163 acres including a kayak course west of Lion’s Park.
