Canadian stonemason George Morrison built a family home in 1861 at historic Mount Vernon Towne north of Red Rocks. It still stands in the historic area west of Matthews/Winters Park. In 1865, he acquired 320 acres south of Red Rocks along Bear Creek and started a mill for grinding gypsum. In 1874, to bene t from the
Denver and South Park Railway, he led a town plat for transporting raw materials from his Morrison Stone, Lime, and Townsite Company. His 1873 Cli House family home is now a historic hotel. The two-story school building he built in 1875 is now a private home.
