The historic Hiwan development began in the 1890s on land purchased by Civil War widow Mary Neosho Williams. By 1899, it was a popular summer camp “Mission of the Trans guration” for visitors from around the world. “Camp Neosho” is now Evergreen Historic District, listed with the National Register of Historic Places. Buildings are now Center Stage for Evergreen Chorale (founded in 1972) and Evergreen Players (founded in 1990). Lariat Lodge Brewing has opened a unique restaurant within the historic area near Center Stage.
The original Trans guration Church and historic cast iron bell continue service. A stone-lined labyrinth sits in a peaceful meadow east of the church along Bear Creek.
